Our assignment is to pair down 20 years of DIY & guerrilla marketing into 7 points in 11 minutes for the 7-11 panel - not an easy task, but very direct (which we imagine is the point). Law may threaten San Francisco music scene.

It appears that Chicago's music and creative communities are not the only ones in danger of falling victim to ridiculous proposal's like the Chicago Promoters' Ordinance.
The city of San Francisco is holding hearing on Monday at City Hall, based on findings from a so-called, ""Night-time Safety Summit".

This is not good news and shows that similar laws are making thier way on to the radar to other cities. All the more reason to stay aware of the issue facing us and not let it "parking meter" it's way into our lives.

"A vocal group of ultra-conservative neighbors have banded with the anti-alcohol and anti-entertainment elements in the police department and the state alcohol control department to shut down night-time entertainment in San Francisco. This is a real threat. These people have come to hearings at City Hall and blamed night-time entertainment for ... society's problems. We need you to show up at Monday's hearing and/or send an email of support now. Again, the hearing is next Monday, Oct 19 at 10am in room 263 at City Hall."

48 Hour Blues Marathon on Maxwell St. (06/10/01)

In light of the recent Chicago Sun-Times expose on Maxwell Street (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) we felt compelled to post our photos from the her last days.

The last bid to save the Home of Chicago Blues, knocked down and fenced off courtesy of UIC - tearing down history so that they can teach it.

For those who do are unaware of her storied history, Maxwell Street was the incubator for the blues, and as a consequence, much of the music that we have today. This is the corner where stood - Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Benny Goodman, etc ... Countless artists performed, experienced it on this street or were otherwise influenced from what has happened here.

A mere sliver of the flavor that was Maxwell St.
(NE corner of Halsted and Maxwell). There will never be anything like it.

Maxwell Street is were waves of immigrants would come (Russian, Jewish, German, Irish, Polish, Italian, African-American, Mexican). It also represented the American entrepreneur at it's most basic level. This area represented so much to so many. Maxwell Street was one of the very few areas to survive the "Great Chicago Fire" - but it could not survive "progress".

In 2001, Maxwell Street played host to the music one last time. These are the photos. All of what you see here is now part of a $750 million dollar development called "University Village". You can read about what has gone on since, on the front page of today's Sunday Sun-Times. Our American history has been sacrificed for "business as usual" ... as usual.

We can remember catching performances, tucked away in the alley, being blown away by dudes on dented harps, drum kits made of duct tape and toothless keyboards. Man they would burn it down. The blues doesn't get any better than that. That was Maxwell St.

Chicago 2016: Setting Ourselves up for Olympic Failure?

No Games Chicago organized a protest at Federal Plaza on April 2nd, in opposition to Chicago's 2016 Olympic bid. It was cold, overcast and raining and JaGoFF was there to document it. (View full photo set here).

The idea of having the Olympics in Chicago is wonderful one. However, if it is at the cost of having less police on the street in favor of rent-a-mall cops and ineffective, big-brother style surveillance cameras "on every street corner" - while our violent crime rate soars. If it means privatizing our public parking meters, selling off our roadways and airports while our school system, public transportation, medical facilities and infrastructure crumbles. If it means sacrificing our creative and cultural communities by proposing ridiculous laws like that of the Promoters' Ordinance - then we simply cannot afford it.

Thanks but no thanks.

This is the video from the "200 Lincolns" exhibit that JaGoFF took part in at The Chicago Art Department last month. With all of the planning that we had to do for the Promoters' Ordinance panel disussion for last week's event at Old Town School, we kind of fell behind on the editing for the art exhibit documentary video. Nonetheless, here it is. The video covers both the set-up party and opening night festivities. JaGoFF had two pieces in the exhibit, which you can view here. Background Story:
In comemmoration of Abraham Lincoln's Bicentennial Birthday, the Chicago Art Department invited the creative community to submit 200 pieces of Lincoln inspired work. The walls, floor and ceilings of CAD were dripping with Abe and an Abe in every medium: skateboard art, video installments, commemorative stamps, modified dunnies, a crucified Abe, a recreated Mutoscope (circa 1895) and even an Abe of the edible variety.

This documentary includes several artist interviews and overall set-up and party footage. Many thanks to everyone who participated. The night was amazing.

The Chicago Promoter's Ordinance is a terrible piece of
legislation that would require:

- $500 - $2000 for license (even if working w/ licensed club).

- Submit to fingerprinting & background check.

- Must acquire $300,000 in liability insurance.

- Definition of promoter is so vague and could apply to not only to promoters, but also effects bands, djs, theater, and other artists.

It can also "equipt the police to be completely arbitrary… if they want to bust somebody, it gives them a way to do it. That is absolutely the enemy of a free society," (Henry Perritt).

The Chicago Promoters Ordinance is about to rear it's ugly head(once again) and according to Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times, "Once again, however, the law is not being made available for public scrutiny, and no public hearings are scheduled to seek input from musicians, music lovers and indie concert promoters."

For those unfamiliar with this proposed law, it has been called:

"... unconstitutional."

200 Lincolns Closing Reception & Future Version 1.0

This Friday, February 27th, marks the closing reception of the "200 Lincolns" exhibit at The Chicago Art Department (JaGoFF participated in the showing by unvieling two new pieces). Opening night was ridiculous, we have never seen such an amazing turn-out for an "art" exhibit and the room was at capacity thru much of the evening. If you missed it, you have one last chance to check out the exhibit on Friday. Final viewing is from 6Pm - 8PM, at which point the lights go down and the music and video begin with Future Version 1.0 (which will feature an evening full of VJ/DJ showcases). JaGoFF is not going to be performing any music, but many of our good friends will be. We invite you all to come and take part in the fun. It's sure to be a great night!

Chicago Re-Invents Itself ...

From the "City of Big Shoulders" to the "City of Big Brother". Perhaps Chicago can learn a few more new tricks from the UK boilerplate.

Here's a great idea how about we put surveillance cameras in the Mayor's and all the aldermen's offices running 24/7 and publicly available? Maybe we could even listen to all meetings and phone calls too? That would probably help to fight crime and make the city a safer place.

"Feeling safe" is obviously more important than actually being safe. If these cameras would keep us safe from cancer, foreclosure, pollution, corruption, and/or losing your job and paying a living wage, etc. - rather than being akin to taking your picture on a rollercoaster at an amusement partk, then yeah. Until they work that one out - no thank you.

It took two days (daze), but we have fully recouperated from the (capacity) crowd at Friday night's "200 Lincoln" exhibit at the Chicago Art Department. Sexy Nurse Mika Fakeblood was there in all of her glory, documenting it all guerrilla style and was kind enough to post the video "200 Lincolns: Don't Knock the Hustle". Enjoy, we did.

"Mika FakeBlood partied with Illinois favorite dead President Gorrilla- style. 200 artworks celebrated Lincoln's Birthday at the Chicago Art Department 2nd Friday Gala. (This Sexy Nurse might bring anyone back to life) However in order to erect the dead 200 artists came together. Jagoff was more than happy to share Abraham and the Two Thieves with the packed house. Mika FakeBlood is more than Happy to wrap the evening up for you! Can Illinois say Crucifixion? It could get messy! But there weren't any cops????? ... On Dec., 20th, 2008, JaGoFF was invited to screen their documentary "Chicago's Promoters' Ordinance Kills Independent Music" at the Chicago Art Department. Following the screening was held Q&A panel discussion in regard to the proposed ordinance, it's implications and current state.

JaGoFF commemorates Lincoln in Chicago Art Department's "200 Lincolns" Exhibit 02/13/09

In commemoration of the 200th bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, JaGoFF is taking part in Chicago Art Department's "200 Lincolns" exhibit on Feb, 13th (1837 S. Halsted, 6PM - 10PM).

We've submited two pieces entitled, "Abraham and the Two Thieves" and "The Lincoln Bicentennial Commemorative Stamp (Truth in Advertising Series)". Come out and join us for the opening, it's going to be a good one.

"Abraham and the Two Thieves"

Modeled after the biblical story of Jesus and the Two Thieves, "Abraham and the Two Thieves" features a benevolant and stoic Lincoln hanging from a cross of surveillance cameras and crucified in an Illinois cornfield.

Having died for the sins of our nation, Lincoln saved the union - he stands deified and is flanked by the two thieves (protrayed by Rod Blagojevich and George Ryan), who both hang in defiance and glare at Lincoln in jealousy and shame.

An evening of wine, music, film and politics ...

We would like to thank all who attended the documentary screening on Saturday. The evening was pure electricity! Despite the snow, 30 mile per hour winds and sub-zero temperatures, the night went off without a hitch. We were thrilled by everyone's participation during the open panel discussion. There was certainly no lack of questions. This is just the start and gives us much to build on. We expect to do a few more of these in the beginning of the new year.

For those of you who were snowed in, had frozen fuel lines or were otherwise not willing to deal with Old Man Winter, we will be posting the video/podcast of the panel after the holiday madness. If you went away empty-handed (we ran out of DVDs) we apologize, there were a bit more people than copies... no worries, you can download and/or embed it here.

It's 5:55 and has snowed about 4 inches in the last couple of hours. We were supposed to be at Fearless Radio twenty minutes ago for an interview about the documentary. Mofo is stranded downtown and cannot catch a cab to get to the radio station. I am stranded at home. What would be a 20 minute drive has become literally a 4 hour drive . Some cars have run out of gas on the expressways. Brutal.

I am going to have to phone mine in. Hopefully mofo catches a cab.

JaGoFF is absolutely THRILLED to announce that we have teamed-up with The Chicago Art Department for the WORLD PREMIERE SCREENING of our documentary "Chicago's Promoters' Ordinance Kills Independent Music", Saturday, Decemember 20th, from 6:30 - 10PM. After the movie, we will be holding a panel discussion fielding the questions and concerns of the community. TheRecordIndustry.com will be taking part, as will be the former dean & professor of law of Chicago Kent College of Law, Henry H. Perritt, Jr. Henry has been a very strong advocate concerning the rights of the independent artist and authored the white paper "Why the event promoters ordinance should be rejected", in which he found the Promoters' Ordinance to be unconstitutional. This is also the white paper on which JaGoFF used as the basis for the documentary.

Following the panel discussion we lighten things up a bit and open the floor to the DJs to spin late into the evening. If you are not hip to the proposed ordinance this is a great starting point. If you are aware of it, this is a great time to voice your questions, concerns and more importantly, for Chicago's creative community to come together as this law if passed would effect the entire creative community. The bottom line is that as written, the proposed ordinance is UNCONSTITUTIONAL and should not pass in any form whatsoever.

For those of you who think that this is a local issue... it is not. The war on the independent artist has crossed over the Atlantic and London now has a similar proposal entitled "Form 696". The city of San Jose just passed an ordinance as well. This is very scary $h!t people, as this effects the future of our culture, our right to free speech and freedom of expression.

If you are not familiar with the CMC, they hold monthly panels dealing with a wide range of subject matter, as it pertains to musicians and the business of entertainment. On Thursday, January 24, the Chicago Music Commission will convene a diverse panel of experts for a groundbreaking public conversation on the economic opportunities being generated by Chicago¹s growing music industry. The event will take place at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance at Millennium Park, 205 E. Randolph Street at 6 p.m., and is open to the public and free of charge. Never before has a panel of such caliber come together in public to discuss Chicago¹smusic industry, its future, and its impact on Chicago¹s economy at large.

The CMC is convening the panel in response to publicity surrounding the recent publication of the CMC¹s groundbreaking economic impact study "Chicago: Music City" [PDF] , conducted by the Cultural Policy Center at the University of Chicago. The study exposes the strengths and weaknesses of Chicago¹s music industry in comparison with those of other North American cities. Along with co-authors Dan Silve and Sarah Lee, Lawrence Rothfield, faculty director of the Cultural Policy Center, will summarize the study¹s findings to open the event and the panelists will address the steps Chicago must take to be recognized as a world-class music city.

The panel of experts will include industry leaders representing many facets of Chicago¹s music economy, including media, promoters, venues, performers, educators, government, urban planners, record label owners, trade associations, recording studio executives and music industry unions.

I ran across this great story about how HAM radio operaters are coming to the rescue to those flooded in Northwestern US. What is ironic about all of this is, that with all of our "state of the art" tech, in the end everything comes down to what is a technology that was born in the first half of the 1800's.

For those of you who are not aware, HAM / Shortwave radio was the web, long before the internet arrived (global communications, broadcasts, data transfers). My older brother received one for a gift on his 10th birthday. I remember listening to late night and anonymous conversations taking place somewhere in space - halfway around the world. We would fall asleep to global station ids, insane appalachian preachers, data transfers and space noise. we'd tune in to eastern bloc/communist radio stations and wonder how it was that they could be so "evil & misguided" (please keep in mind, I was a child and the "Cold War" was alive and kicking.

When I was a teenager, I learned how to play "Stairway to Heaven" by turning knobs (BFO Pitch). While I wasn't a techie with it, my experience has been very memorable.

Years later, I dug it out the attic and and hooked it up to some effects processors and ran it thru a dj mixer with some foot pedals. Beyond providing otherworldly broadcasts it produced sweeps that were so ridulously thick and warm. It actually has made it one a couple of our recordings over the years.

The sad thing is that with it being on the road so much over the years, it definitely needs a bit of TLC.

Sorry if this post bored you ... but this was probably the only time that I could ever write about HAM radio. So take that one off of the list.

Just ran across this fun bit, detailing the listening and entertainment behaviors according to political bent (liberal vs conservative). Scroll down for the fun or click here. for more in depth stats.

- Out of 15 musical genres, conservatives were more likely than the rest of the respondents to listen to only two of them: country and gospel. What genre are they least likely to listen to, compared to the rest of the respondents? Not punk or hip-hop, as you might expect, but world music. World music is also the music genre where we see the greatest difference between conservatives and liberals.

- Conservatives are the least likely group to listen to jazz (34% vs. 44% vs. 53%) and reggae (8% vs. 20% vs. 26%).

- Over 90% of conservatives said they never enjoy reggae, electronic music or Latin music. Over 95% said they never enjoy world music and punk music.

- Liberals, on the other hand, are more likely than other respondents to enjoy almost every music genre, including world, punk, Latin, hip-hop and rap, blues, reggae, electronica, R&B and soul, jazz, folk and traditional music. Rock was the most popular genre among liberals (67%).

- Although all political types claimed they enjoy classical music, moderates were the least enamored with it (55.5% listen to it compared to almost 62% of the rest of respondents). Moderates also showed their distaste for folk & traditional music (72.5% said they don’t listen to it, compared to 62.4% of the rest of the respondents), and they joined conservatives in their distaste for world music (90% said they don’t listen to it, compared to 71% of liberals.)

- Moderates’ favorite music is rock (58%). Conservatives’ favorite music is classical (60%) followed by country (56%) and rock (55%).

ARTISTS : MEET THE FUTURE...

In the latest blow against the so-called "major labels", the much hyped release by Saul Williams/Trent Reznor, has built and improved upon the Radiohead model. While it certainly and by no means the only way to go, commercially, it looks like THE leading contender for a viable, working model in the future of independent artist music distribution.

While the industry remains so far out of touch , they may finally have no other choice but to answer the call if they wish to remain relevant.

The truth is, from an independent artist perspective, who really cares what their fate is - as they have never represented the artist (or the listener) to begin with ... their time has come and is long past it's due date - any artist worth their wieght in dog crap already knows this.

Here is how the Saul Williams/Trent Reznor release is structured: For the cost of your email addy, the listener is allowed to download the entire album (CD artwork and booklet included - yippiiieee) in 192k/mp3/DRM free format! For $5, the listener can choose between 360k/mp3 or the lossless FLAC file. For listener AND artist, this is a win/win situation ... listeners unfamilar with the artist, the free model gets the word out (which leads to more potential sales), while the paying customer gets what they actually pay for. Considering there are no distro, manufacturing, shipping, warehouse and/or inventory cost associated with the download model, the $5 price tag looks to be right on target. Kudos to Trent & Saul for following thru and helping to map the future.

In one of the most sickening displays yet, a Minn. woman has been found guilty of, what basically amounts to sharing songs online and fined $220,000 (or $9250 per song) by our "friends" at the RIAA. (All of which we are sure will go back to the artists. HA.). I wonder how the "artists" feel knowing that this woman will in debt for the rest of life.

As one forum post read, "The defendant has been made a homeless slave to some of the world's biggest companies, and so have we all."

You can continue buying this garbage and supporting these asswipes, or support indie artists, knowing that the money that you're spending is truely going to the artist - in turn, allowing them to create more music. Anything that has ever been empowering for the artist/consumer, that isn't and cannot be controled by these evil bastards is sued, dismantled and destroyed. Look no further than the original Napster, MP3.com and now ... the new enemy in internet radio.

It may have taken the better part of a decade, but thank God that Radiohead, NIN and Prince have FINALLY stepped up to the plate. All these years that we (JaGoFF) were screaming from the mountain tops was beginning to make us feel as though we were the town madmen.

Rest assured ... you can download & share our work for free. You can burn our CD and share it. We won't ever sue you for that. But as with us and any artist out there, if you dig on it - go buy the cd, get the DRM FREE downloads, pick up a t-shirt or check out a show. Just stop supporting the a-holes that are suing you. There is an entire world of truely great independent music for you to explore and that deserve your attention.

WIRED reports that the Recording Industry Assholes of America are at it yet once again.

This time it is a Native American single mother of two from Minnesota that is the target...

Most of the jury apparently doesn't have a firm grasp of the technology:

"Some of the 12 panelists told the judge during jury selection that they lacked basic computer knowledge. Some said they had never been on the internet or don't use it now. None admitted to using a file-sharing network. Five said they had a digital music player and two said they copied a compact disc."<---(thieves!)

So, on the first day of the trial, a Sony BMG Executive helped clear things up by informing the jury that RIPPING A SINGLE SONG AMOUNTS TO THEFT. (She probably would turn in her ex-boyfriend for making her a sappy mix tape too!)

Fortunately though, they seem to be having a heart and are going easy on the defendant:

"The industry in this case is only suing over 25 songs, with damages up to $150,000 per violation, because it doesn't want to exact too big of financial penalties by going for all 1,700, testified Jennifer Pariser, Sony BMG's anti-piracy chief. "The damages would be substantial," she said. "We have no intent in pursing cases like that."

Isn't that nice? :-)

Makes you want to run out and buy records doesn't it?

p.s. on a side note: remember to make sure you don't sing "happy birthday" at your kid's party - public performance of it is copyright infringement.
